Some numbers aren’t real.

For so long Dave Ambrose and Lawrence Grodeska labored silently in the world of ones and zeroes. In cubicles eight hours a day, 40 hours a week, they saw numbers on a paycheck twice a month and dreamed of meaning and melody. In time Lawrence and Dave realized that the zeroes, the ones, the hours, the dollars weren’t real – they weren’t what mattered.

What really mattered were the songs in their heads. What was real were the moments when a catchy hook and a clever lyric created a smile. When a sonic wave of electric guitars, lush chords and vocal harmony transported you far away from the cubicle and computer screen. Those were real numbers.

And so, in 2007, the pair decided to create their shared musical vision: The Real Numbers. Part power pop, part quirky melodic rock, The Real Numbers walk the line between nerd rock and catchy pop, Silicon Valley smarts and San Francisco style. Cristian Hernandez and Art McConnell were enlisted to round out the rhythm section, punctuating seamless arrangements with a solid back beat and no-nonsense groove. Sometimes smart, sometimes smart-ass, their lyrics make mundane observations meaningful, amusing, or both.

The group’s debut album, Welcome to the Numberhood, is a work full of melodic hooks, beautiful harmony, and concise, well-crafted compositions. The Real Numbers conjure an era of songwriting come and gone from commercial airwaves, but carried on by the likes of Weezer, Ben Folds, and The Feeling.
